Christian Aldridge is a contemporary artist working from a studio in Darsham, Suffolkwhilst he also teaches at the University of Suffolk, at East Coast College, Lowestoft. Christian grew up in coastal Suffolk and as his family were friendly with the abstract artist Frank Beanland.
His paintings use the language and techniques of drawing and printmaking to explore
surface, shape and the handmade. We have shown Christian's paintings since we opened Rowe & Williams in 2017, and we have had the privilege of seeing his work shift over the years.
Aldridge continuously develops and tests his painterly language.Initially his paintings evolved over time as they were alternatively built up or scraped away over a gesso ground until they achieved a stable and meaningful form. The introduction of distemper and a range of different supports such as linen, led to a simplification of form with colours sinking into the ground. His latest work explores shapes and language to suggest aspects of concealment and erasure.
