Frederick William Baldwin was born in Lowestoft and studied at Beccles before becoming a draughtsman at Brooke Marine Ltd. Lowestoft. Largely self taught he did receive instruction from George Clausen RA and encouragement by members of the Sole Bay Group, such as Martin Hardie and Walter Crittall.
Baldwin met Leonard Squirrel in Lowestoft in 1923 and they undertook many sketching trips together around Suffolk. He was commissioned by LNER and P&O for illustrative work and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1934-56, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Sole Bay Group in Southwold.
