Leonard Squirrell was born in Ipswich and studied at Ipswich School of Art from 1908-16 and the Slade School of Art from 1920 where he studied under Henry Tonks and Philip Wilson Steer. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1913 as a student and won the British Institution Scholarship in Engraving in 1915. After graduation he travelled in Europe producing landscape etchings and he won Gold Medals at the International Print Makers Exhibitions in
Los Angeles in 1925 and 1930.
In 1929 he succeeded Charles Baskett in teaching etching at the Ipswich School of Art where he remained until 1940. He supported Frederick Baldwin (whose work we also show) from 1923 and they travelled together throughout Suffolk.
He is represented in the national Collections of the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
