Lionel Bulmer studied at the Royal College of Art after he was demobbed from service in World War II. Here he met his life partner Margaret Green and after accepting part-time teaching positions at Kingston and Walthamstow respectively the pair, in their holidays, took to driving a van/studio across South-East England in an arc from London, eventually finding a house in West Suffolk that they purchased for £850.
They adored the beach at Aldeburgh, but on discovering Walberswick and Southwold they were further enamoured by the area, and made extended visits every summer from 1960 to 1990.
As their work had become increasingly indistinguishable from one another's Lionel decided to make a radical shift and taking inspiration from Philp Wilson Steer's painting of children playing the game Knucklebones at Ipswich's Christchurch Mansion Gallery and he adopted a pointillist technique with an enhanced sense of colour.
