This early work is typical of Bulmer’s tonal post-impressionist work that he made whilst based in London. It is known that he visited the coast in Sussex at this time but Figures on a Beach is a rare East Anglian view depicting the final removal of WWII coastal defences from Bacton Beach, Norfolk in 1949. As such it represents a joyous reopening of the coast and of memories of the freedoms of prewar leisure, with children preparing to dash to the water’s edge.
Provenance
This work was formely in the collection of architect Sir Colin St John Wilson (1922-2007). He was a keen collector and donated many works to The Pallant House Gallery, Chicester.
