Blair Hughes-Stanton was born in London and attended Byam Shaw School of Art 1919-22, Royal Academy Schools 1922-3 and evening classes Leon Underwood’s Brook Green School of Art 1923-5. Here he met the American Marion Mitchell who introduced him to etching and a fellow student Gertrude Hermes, whom he married.
In 1930 he and Hermes became involved with the Gregynog Press in Wales and he was seen as being partly responsible for the development in quality of the wood-engravings and illustrations at the Press. Whilst at the Press he started an affair with artist/writer Ida Graves and on moving to Suffolk they founded The Gemini Press. They lived at Higham, Suffolk and were regularly visited by artist Ivon Hitchens.
After war service he taught at Colchester School of Art 1945-7 and married Anne Ross in 1952 moving to North House in Manningtree. His ambitious late linocuts depicted the Stour Valley as seen from his a window in his home.
