Constable's English Landscape Scenery comprises 22 of Constable's paintings translated into the tonal black and white of mezzotint by the printmaker David Lucas. It was published in five parts from 1830-2 and following its completion, Lucas approached Constable to work on a series of larger more ambitious mezzotints.
The Cornfield was published in 1834 by F G Moon, London alongside a print of Constable's The Lock. The pair were critically and financially a success, and the enhanced detail afforded by the larger plate is clear. Constable's treatment of individual, damaged trees in his art marked a break with earlier landscape painting in which trees were often just generic or indicative.
