Anthony Day was born in Wicken, Cambridgeshire in 1922, the son of a farmer. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during WWII, he studied at Cambridge School of Art and Reading University. He turned to painting out of doors as a way of spending time in the countryside writing 'Farming became inseparable from my love of landscape and I returned to farm its beauty.'
Ancient Elm II, is dated 1959-61 and is a vigorous portrait of an individual tree in Day's characteristic gouache. He painted his local Fenland landscape in tempera or gouache, the later allowing a more gestural application of paint. The large scale and composition lend the work an anthropomorphic feel. It is presented in its original frame
